The West End Children’s Hockey Society was started in 2004 by a group of parents to offer fun drop-in hockey for children in the West End, Coal Harbour and Downtown communities. Our goal is to eliminate children’s barriers to entry into Canada’s game.
Completely run by volunteers, WECHS’s goal is to make the experience of playing hockey attainable for girls and boys of all ages, skill levels, and incomes, in a safe and affordable environment. Many players in our program have progressed to recreational hockey locally, and all participants have seen significant improvement in their skating and hockey skills.
The program is offered twice weekly from September to April at the West End rink, in an hour-long on-ice session. Volunteer coaches help lead on-ice warm-ups, skills-focused drills, followed by a scrimmage and a shoot-out. WECHS uses a foam rubber ‘safety puck’, per the guidelines of our society insurance. The focus is on fun, team play sportsmanship, and learning to love the great game of hockey!
We have a ‘pay what you can’ donation philosophy. All families and volunteers in the program contribute time and money to ensure that WECHS is a long-term resource for the community. You can make a donation through Etransfer using Wechsociety@gmail.com or through Paypal.
We continue to expand our relationship with the West End Community Centre, Lord Roberts Elementary and King George Secondary.
We endeavor to try and keep our program affordable for families; however, the cost of ice rentals has increased dramatically over the years. Please help us grow this program by providing us with a donation. Thank you.
